Record #5

“Frank Sinatra, in his autobiographical article in Life Magazine says, ‘For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business, the best exponent of a song. He excites me when I watch him–he moves me. He’s the signer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more.’”

I thoroughly enjoy tonight’s album from end to end.

Record #4

Today looks to be a musical day.
Infact, possibly one of the greatest musicals in history!

Al Goodman and His Orchestra play
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s

South Pacific

Pretty good listen tonight! This album had clearly been played a few times, but that’s okay; it still sounded good and added in some character.

Vocals on this album featured: Richard Torigi, Susan Shaute, William Reynolds, Dolores Martin, Paula Wayne

My favorite cut was number two on side A: Some Enchanted Evening. I liked the lyrics, “Once you found her, never let her go,” along with the arrangement.

I also liked:
Side A cut 4: Bali Ha’I
Side B cut 4: This Nearly Was Mine

I guess tonight was made for loving? The record collection spit out Ray Anthony’s, “Love Is For The Two Of Us” as the record for the day.

Not a bad record at all if you are looking for some light hearted, laid back romance music to go with a glass of wine. Would also make for a nice listen to on Sunday with the paper.

My favorites:
side 1 cut 3: Truck Stop
side 1 cut 5: He’ll Have To Go
side 2 cut 1: Slipping Around

Record #2

So today I reached into the pile and pulled out a more mellow album compared to yesterday. Instead of the entire orchestra, it’s just a piano. This evening I relaxed to Roger Williams and his album “Till” for a lovely 30 minutes of peace. Turns out to be a nice album, very relaxing and if I was laying in bed the music would have soothed me straight to sleep (a good thing).

My favorites:
Side 1 cut 1: “Till (Sigman-Danvers)”
Side 1 cut 4: “Que Sera, sera (Livingston-Evans)”
Side 2 cut 1: “Facination (F. D. Marchetti)”
Side 2 cut 6: “Moonlight Love (From ‘Clair de Lune’ by Claude Debussy) (Adaptation by D. Savino)”

As I was working on putting this blog together I decided two things while listening to the first piece of vinyl for this blog:

  • 1) I am going to start keeping two piles till Christi designs my organizational system and catalog. The “listened to” and the “not listened to” pile.
  • 2) I need to add a background story page for those who do not know the details of this collection.

So the first record from the lot is part of the Time Life Records collection.

Album: Great Moments Of Music: Marches, Volume 2
Featuring Arthur Fiedler and The Boston Pops Orchestra

Overall I really enjoyed listening to this one, I was even air-conducting for part of it. (Classy, I know.) When I picked this record up and put it on the turn table I hadn’t looked at the track listing yet. So I was surprised by the time track 3 on side 2 rolled around and it turned out to be “Elgar: Pomp And Circumstance No. 1 In D Major” because had I known I was going to be getting the album, I wouldn’t have bought the song from iTunes in June.

Probably my favorite tracks on the album were:
Side 1 cut 2: “Alford: Colonel Bogey March”
Side 1 cut 4: “Handy: St. Louis Blues March (Arranged by Richard Hayman)”
Side 2 cut 2: “Verdi: Grand March (from Aida)”

And of course the best air conducting marches:
Side 1 cut 5: “Wilson: Seventy-Six Trombones (from The Music Man) (Arranged by Leroy Anderson)”
Side 2 cut 1: “Bizet: March Of The Toreadors (from Carmen)”

Welcome to the blog which is devoted to exploring a music collection!

Let’s get straight to the jist:

Everyday I pull out a record that I haven’t listened to yet and listen to it all the way through. Now you may be confused, but the collection I am exploring is over 2000 records deep… so that means I’m covered for the next few years in posts.

Each day – or most days – expect a post of what I listened to and a review and we’ll see where this blog goes from there. Feel free to comment on all posts and if you want to write your own review, I’m up for guest posts.
